Steena had kept to herself for the past couple of days, wrapped up in everything that was once Max's world there at the estate. Enough was enough at the recent avoidance-- Gavin sought Steena out and eventually found her out back from the place. As polite as the brute could be, he took care to make sounds as he approached her while asking how long she was going to be like this. She point blank asks him the question that'd been likely going through more than just her mind, but the minds of the rest there. Not to dismiss the weight of the question, but it seemed pretty straight forward to him, if the situation came down to Max or the rest-- they'd have to take him out...as the kid was now, he wasn't the one he'd watched care of his mother during her illness. Though that was if they couldn't save him. It's not like they weren't going to try. Gavin didn't appear phased that her former opinion of him was more of a test subject before a friend and that would have made the action he'd posed to her easier...but Max and Deven was different. Steena intended to go in and save them...but if they couldn't be saved-- she didn't know if she could make that call.
Mal, quiet and undetectable to the pair with whatever tricks he had, decided to contribute to that conversation stating she wouldn't be the one to make the call. He stated that he was going to bring his people home alive and that was the deal. Gavin had intended to say more to Steena but went on the defense at the other man's appearance. Alive though wouldn't mean that Max was himself anymore either. He didn't like the man or the way Mal was talking to Steena as if they were slow about what he'd said...it wasn't like they'd asked for him to interrupt their private conversation. Steena could sense that Gavin was trying to be polite but wasn't having some difficulties with Mal present, and rested a hand on him while continuing the current conversation.
Of course that didn't mean Mal wasn't beyond pointing out that Gavin wasn't asked to be her in the first place and that the only reason he wasn't in some lab or prison without any record of existence was because of him after Seeker had killed Layla's sister. Gavin was here now because of Mal's prior actions and any talk about snuffing people out was not how this was going to play out here. If not for Steena, he might have lunged at Mal to see if those words were more bark than bite. He didn't respond to Mal, refusing to add fuel to the fire, but he couldn't deny one truth...Gavin hadn't been asked here. Even when Steena had contacted him, she hadn't really asked him to join her there. He'd come on his own by choice and he didn't really care to explain himself-- not to Mal...or anyone else that'd asked recently.
Though he didn't need to speak up for himself-- Steena stood up for him. Explaining that who Gavin is now is not how he was when Seeker was leading the group at the Tomorrow Center. What had been done to Gavin was the byproduct of experimentation and an unchecked mutation-- the mental conditioning that made him as he was before had been undone and the man hadn't acted violently or without care as in the past. Not that her words would give him a pass to Mal and the others at the estate for what he did do in the past with Seeker. He didn't expect it to either, he was a monster but he didn't always have to be one. He let Steena and Mal finish their conversation before offering the statement that they could play nice with the rest at the estate before walking off to join Steena in the library. There wouldn't be much time to rest anyway, Apocalypse would be found an hour later. They would be on the move soon.
