Normally evening would bring about peace and quiet as the world goes to sleep…not exactly could be said for the interior of the mansion, at least not tonight. Driven by curiosity still after his experiment with Alys earlier in the day, Max was teleporting around the estate trying to locate Alys and Veronica. Ironically both where in their respective rooms when he finally found them, he probably could have saved time by checking there first.
Veronica had been in her room reading before Max finally appeared at her door, but not before mentally yelling just as loud as he had been bouncing around the estate. He’d popped by Alys’ door as she peeked out to see what the fuss was about as was told to follow him down the hallway to Veronica’s room. She couldn’t ‘exactly’ follow him…not when he teleported down the hall ahead of her. Once she’d gathered with the other two outside the hallway, Max stated his idea. He wanted to have Veronica take a look into Alys’ mind…to see if she could pick up something about the mental aspect of her power— Max had experienced first-hand a vision when taking her hand the night he’d brought her from the airport to the mansion. The experience had left a mark and brought to mind other questions he’d been wondering since events that took place over the Mediterranean.
Veronica was up to the task, and Max was very eager to find out more…it was like Alys was becoming a mini science experiment for him. In the end, the decision would be up to her, no one was doing anything without her okay. She couldn’t help but feel the panic inside at the idea, though over the past several days…she’d been allowed to roam about with her thoughts and attempt to adjust. Even as the concept terrified her, of someone actually looking into her head over this, nothing would be answered if she didn’t at least try…and she meekly agrees to the idea. As if satisfied at setting up a test to run in the background, Max seemed to beam and stated he’d leave the two of them to work and then teleported off somewhere else.
When asked where she’d want to ‘set up shop’ to do this, Alys offered the guest bedroom she’d been using. It was the more familiar place for her in the mansion, and likely the best place to offer her more comfort for this experiment. Once in the privacy of the guest room, Veronica suggested she lay down and get comfortable on the bed while pulling up a chair for herself to sit. It took awhile before Alys could calm down, but once she did, Veronica was able to bring her into her mindscape…which for the most part just looked like a dark room to her. She was alone for just a moment before Veronica opened a door and stepped into the room with her. She took a moment to orient herself to the new surroundings…or perspective…or how one might describe being in one’s own head, perhaps literally…? She wasn’t certain this worked so when asked if she was ready, Alys wasn’t certain how to do anything…she’d never experienced something like this. Veronica suggested to start where Alys would like and think on that memory, she would take care of the rest.
She took a breath…and figured the best place to begin was the first time that ‘light’ flared up, back in Albania. For awhile…Alys hadn’t been feeling well and had left to go get something to help with the fever she’d been struggling with and on the way back hadn’t noticed the man that was harassing her until it was too late. He didn’t like being ignored, but she’d continued to do just that and just barely back inside the safe zone of the camp or center she’d been deployed to with other Peace Corp members helping in the health education program. He’d suddenly snaked out an arm to grab her…and that’s when everything happened. Alys was aware of people yelling…probably for the man to leave her alone…she felt him put a knife to her throat…and then that ‘light’ had flared up around her. She could feel or sense core points in the man…each one being broken by that glowing light that reached out and sucked it into itself as if it were alive and feeding. She couldn’t move, not just because he’d been holding her…but something else didn’t allow her to pull and break away to turn and run. Once the last point broke and got absorbed by the ‘light’ the man that held her stared on with dead, unseeing eyes…dropping to the ground as he released Alys. The distant screams from behind had changed now…she turned to see the faces of those she’d been around with and worked with…terrified— Alys ran. The memory broke up as she dropped to her knees, breathing shallow, in whatever counted for a ground within her mind.
